Boosting Business Acumen to Build Great Leaders

What does it take for a global provider of safety and specialty services to sustain its market-leading position? At APi Group, it’s a commitment to Building Great Leaders® with the goal of developing everyone as a leader.

To lead effectively, employees must understand how they can impact strategic goals while speaking a common language around success measures and results. To establish this foundation, APi Group engaged Culture Partners to strengthen business acumen and financial literacy through Zodiak®: The Game of Business Finance and Strategy.

In a recent fireside chat, APi Group’s Jason Hult, a safety services segment financial leader, talked to Culture Partners VP Robb Gomez about why Zodiak appealed to the company and why building business acumen is so critical. “We invest in a lot of different trainings because we want to be the No. 1 people-first company and No. 1 in business results,” explained Hult. “Zodiak offered a fun and engaging way to help people develop financial knowledge and business acumen. And bolstering those skills is key to better decision-making.”

Specifically, Zodiak training places participants in the role of business owners, where they go through three years of simulated business operations customized to reflect their current environment. They’re able to see the impact of their business decisions on strategic goals while gaining exposure to, and understanding of, key financial metrics and statements.

“The new skills employees have acquired as a result of Zodiak training are starting to have a positive influence on major financial goals, including EBITDA, recurring revenue, and free cash flow,” said Hult.
